Hershi is Our Fur Baby

Waiting for Libation at Sloppy Joe’s in Key West
I’d like to introduce you to our little boy Hershi. Isn’t he just too cute for words? Hershi is our two and a half year old Yorkie and we love him to pieces. We had another Yorkie before him, Izzy, who we used to refer to as a Yorkie on steroids because he was so big. Izzy was never fat just 14 pounds of love. We were so devastated when he got sick and we knew the end was coming that I started to grieve before he was even gone. Izzy died on a Tuesday and by Friday I really needed a new puppy to fill the void. After much discussion, because Steve said he really wasn’t ready, we began our search. Being a believer in really connecting to a pet I felt nothing for the adorable Yorkie puppies we saw on our first visit to a local breeder. The next morning Steve went on line and found a hobby breeder in Jupiter “Yorkie Be Mine” who had 2 puppies looking for a home. Steve took one look at his face and the pictures of his mother and father and knew immediately he was the one. We went to meet him that very afternoon and fell in love instantly. Hershi was supposed to be my Chanukah present but it became obvious almost from day that he was joined at the hip with Steve. Hershi goes almost everywhere with us and he’s a fabulous traveler. He is very smart, well behaved and loves to get “dressed” but I think the most interesting fact about him is how we named him. Being of the Jewish faith it is our tradition to name our children after a beloved family member who has passed away. It’s our belief that this allows their souls to rest in peace. When we adopted Izzy we named him after my Zeyda (grandfather) Israel who lived to be almost 108. Yes I know, this wasn’t a child however our son was not married at the time and we were certainly not having any more children at our age. When Izzy passed on and we discussed names for our next puppy we talked about naming it after my Dad Sam, may he rest in peace. Then Steve brought up the fact that we may be slighting other family members who were no longer with us. Cleverly he came up with Hershi and acronym for Herman Evelyn Rose Sam Helen and Israel – Steve’s parents, my parents and my grandparents. A mighty big name for a very small dog.

I love to wear my Tacky Tourist Shirt!
