The Kitchen transformation in Sulphur Springs, Texas occurred because our friends mentioned that they couldn’t find anyone who could or would install a new mosaic above their stove.

Original Cowboy Mosaic Backsplash
When we visited Sandee and Mack a little over a year prior, Sandee showed me this gorgeous ceramic tile mosaic along with coordinating handles that she had bought. Back then she said she’d bought it over a year ago. And when we arrived this year (2025) the tiles and boxes of coordinating ceramic knobs and drawer pulls were still laid out on a bridge table, but not on the wall in the kitchen!

Steve installing the new mosaic over the old one
When they bought their home about 13 years ago, the kitchen had a cowboy theme. Though appropriate for living on a ranch, Sandee never cared for it. In addition to the cowboy mosaic there were black branding iron symbols scattered on the white backsplash tiles. Everything was very beige. And like me, Sandee is an artist who loves to be surrounded by color.

New mosaic ready for grouting
Both Steve and I found it sad that that gorgeous, colorful mosaic wasn’t where it needed to be. Plus we knew that Steve was quite capable of installing the new mosaic. So as a way of thanking them for their generous hospitality, we surprised them one day.

Custom ceramic knobs and drawer pulls
They had tickets to a play all the way in Fort Worth. So while they were out we installed the mosaic! While Steve was working on it I discovered that those ugly branding iron symbols were merely painted on top of the glazed white tiles. In less than 5 minutes I had scraped off all of them, leaving a pristine white backsplash.

Finished mosaic. So pretty!
The expression of joy on Sandee’s face when she saw the new mosaic was priceless!!!

Handles on, mosaic done. Now the cabinets are crying for color!

The drama is revealed.
The next day was spent replacing every single knob and drawer pull in the entire kitchen. But that impact was lost on those beige wood cabinets. What was definitely needed was to paint the cabinetry.

Another view of the Kitchen Transformation in Texas. And yes, while he was at it, Steve painted the walls pale yellow!

Off we went to Lowe’s to get paint chips with a sample drawer pull in hand. Since Sandee’s favorite color is green we selected just about every example of shades of green that would work with the handles. But we needed to see them with the mosaic as well to make a final decision.

Once back home it was really easy to select a lighter green for the upper cabinets and a much darker shade for the bottoms.

Whimsical chicken towel holder
After removing the handles once again, Steve began the task of painting the cabinets using a roller to create an ultra smooth surface. And when everything was good and dry all of the handles were reinstalled.

The final reveal of the Kitchen Transformation in Texas

The color palette
The transformation was so dramatic!!! But it isn’t totally complete. At some point Sandee and Mack want to change the light fixtures, replace the countertops and install a new floor. However for now, they are very happy to simply enjoy their bright, cheerful, colorful kitchen transformation in Texas!!!
