Isn’t this an interesting time we are experiencing together? We can be supporting local while practicing social distancing. Every day we get new directives and new information as we navigate the reality that is our “new normal” – for the time being. While people’s lives have been disrupted, and there are some apprehensions and insecurities around what the future holds, it is a great time for us to work together, watch out for each other and make socially responsible decisions. While we need to socially isolate and stay in our homes, we still need to eat. Now, more than ever it is crucial to support your local businesses while still staying in. It is possible to still shop local while staying at home, and we offer some tips for you to enjoy local cuisine while still practicing social distancing and good health protocol.
Supporting Local While Practicing Social Distancing
One of the wonderful things about these trying times is the way in which necessity drives innovation. Many of the great restaurants you would normally enjoy are still open for delivery. By keeping a skeleton staff and practicing safe drop-offs, restaurants are still able to provide take out dinners to their customers. By ordering and paying online, and having the driver leave your food at the doorstep you can practice social distancing while still supporting local businesses. When times are difficult it is important to support local businesses as these unprecedented times can have substantial emotional and economic impact on us all, especially those in an industry that is usually bustling.
The added bonus or ordering in? You and your family can still enjoy date nights and family takeout nights from the comfort and safety of your own home!

Aside from great takeout meals, we also need to prepare for the day-to-day nutritional needs of our family. While grocery stores are practicing social distancing and keeping things clean and sanitized, it is safer to order groceries online for pickup or delivery. However, even when getting your groceries this way, it is important to practice good sanitation techniques when putting your groceries away after they’ve been delivered. If it all possible, try to leave your groceries in your garage or on your porch for three days. We know that the Coronavirus can live that long outside of the human body; so if it’s possible, try to leave your groceries in an isolated area for that amount of time. However, we recognize that this is not always feasible. Therefore, when bringing your groceries in, first, sanitize one side of the surface where you’ll be unpacking your groceries with a standard disinfectant and leave the other side unsanitized. You will then systematically transfer your groceries from the unsanitized side to the sanitized side. For a more detailed explanation of how to safely bring your groceries inside and sanitize them before putting them away, please follow the link included at the end of this article.
