Snow Capped Mountains on Our Drive to Taos

Fully refreshed after a good night’s sleep we woke up early for our first full day in Santa Fe. Only we didn’t actually spend the day in town. Instead we took the scenic route to Taos after a lovely breakfast at our hotel. The weather was a bit overcast and snow was forecast for Taos that night so we headed out early to spend the day there and leave before the snow started.

An Interesting Artist’s Studio and Gallery en Route to Taos

We made one slight detour along the way at at Oviedo, a combination farm, art studio and gallery owned by a husband and wife whose family has lived in the area for centuries. The artist does amazing work but it was his bronze sculptures that really drew us in. So much so that we absolutely had to buy one of his pieces. Of course all we really could afford was a tiny salamander which was a lovely shade of verdigris with highlights of shiny bronze and it looks just perfect on our cocktail table as a new addition to our huge collection of salamanders.
The air was quite brisk when we arrived in Taos but I couldn’t wait to get out of the car and begin exploring. I have to say that I was a bit disappointed. I guess I have heard so much about how fabulous it was for so many years that I drew a very romantic image in my mind. But instead of gallery after gallery of incredible art there were tons of souvenir shops and just a smattering of art galleries. We still managed to have fun shopping and remained undaunted when the flurries of snow began to fall. Nothing was going to keep us from lunch at Michael’s Kitchen because it had been so highly recommended.

Michael’s Kitchen is a homey, friendly place with great food and very reasonable prices. The food was delicious and plentiful! Steve and I perused the menu and the exact same lunch struck our fancy. It was huge and we should have shared but we were little piggies and we each had our own Philly Cheesesteak Tacos with crisp well seasoned fries.

At the back of a large expanse of dirt is a very large Mexican style home.

A New Mexican Style Hacienda in Taos

We waddled back to the car and drove to where my cousin Gail and her husband Frank bought property years ago. They had not visited the area in quite a few years so we volunteered to check it out and see if any homes had been built there yet. There were probably a dozen beautiful haciendas and the views are absolutely spectacular. But the snow was falling a little heavier so we decided to high tail it out of there and get back to Santa Fe where it was dry and warmer.

Our decision for dinner was an easy one. We headed back to Cowgirl BBQ because the food was so good and we had had so much fun there the night before. Again we sat in the bar area, had Coronas and shared the Guacamole to begin dinner. But this time we shared their extraordinary Fried Chicken Mac and Cheese. It was so good we both inhaled it and thought about ordering a second one. Instead we opted for that decadent molten chocolate cake with ice cream and hot fudge that we had the night before. Great choice!!
