There’s Nothing Quite Like Mother’s

Wednesday, May 26 marked the beginning of the New Orleans Wine and Food Experience for 2010. Since we were attending one of the wine pairing dinners that night we had decided that we should go out for breakfast and skip lunch. What better place than that true New Orleans fixture, Mother’s on Poydras Street.

Mother’s was another place that Steve and I had gone to way back in 1992 as part of the catering conference. I remembered walking there from the Convention Center, ordering our Po’ Boys at the counter and pretty much what the place looked like. Steve on the other hand remembered nothing, nada, zilch of that experience. Breakfast was the perfect  choice to jog his memory of just how good Mother’s was and still is.

My yummy omelet and a whole variety of hot sauces. I went right for the Crystal!

We both ordered omelets which came loaded with mushrooms, green onion, andouille sausage, melted provolone cheese, a side of creamy grits and fabulous biscuits with jam and butter. In true NOLA fashion we added a bit more heat with some hot sauce and proceeded to devour our breakfast. Since we had to park in a parking lot we had plenty of time after breakfast to wander around. We were close to the waterfront so we headed over to the Riverwalk Shops to browse. We had learned that the Museum of the American Cocktail and the Food and Beverage Museum were at the far end of Riverwalk and we really wanted to tour it. As we walked and got a little much needed cardio we noted the stores we had passed that we wanted to visit on our way back. The museum was a delight. There was all kinds of memorabilia, fabulous food displays, history of the cocktail, and some wonderful artwork. The painting of the chef behind Steve, is of Susan Spicer of Bayona fame, whose restaurant I wrote about this past December. There is also an enormous bar dating back to the 1800’s that they are restoring after salvaging it from the river after Hurricane Katrina. On the way back to the car we stopped in a shop that had this amazing Alligator Chef. I have been collecting anything with a chef’s toque for quite a while but I never saw one quite like this. My sweatheart bought it for me along with everything else in a toque that they had for sale! I LOVE that man!! We happily toted our treasures back to the car and returned to the RV to chill for a bit before our big evening of dining and wining.
