As I mentioned in my last post, I needed to add Westmoreland Museum of American Art 2 as the second installment. There was just an overabundance of photos to share!

Atlantic Salmon

Orange Roughy
This part deux is about the Art Maze. The Art Maze, according to the handout, “was created in partnership with A-MAZE-D, founded by maze designer Dave Phillips and muralist Chris Minsal. It features 6 visual challenges designed by Dave, along with murals by Chris and 5 other artists, all inspired by works in the Museums’s galleries.”

Bluefish Tuna

Fish Eyes
As we wandered through the Art Maze we were challenged to explore it in four different ways.

Taste of Extinction

How much is that hubby in the window?
The first was obviously to navigate our way through the very cleverly made maze. The maze was made entirely out of cardboard boxes!

Patchwork Quilt

Hummingbird through the Maze
The second challenge was to complete the six visual challenges within the maze.

The Garden

Woman in the Foliage
Next we were tasked with matching the artist with the artwork.

Hands

Birds in the Art Maze
And our last challenge was to find the artworks in the galleries.

Pink and Black Hummingbird

Asian Chef
Unfortunately we made the mistake of doing the tour of the galleries first, instead of the maze. Had we done the Art Maze first, we would have known to look for a letter on each of the inspiration artworks. And those letters each revealed a hidden word. But since we’d saved the Art Maze for last, it kind of made that last challenge impossible.

Laser Focused

Nectar
But the challenge of matching the artist with the art that inspired them had answer keys located near the cardboard windows in the Art Maze itself.

Bird House
We felt like children trying to find our way through the maze. I heard shrieks of glee as Steve and our friends discovered clues and each of the colorful murals leading us to the exit.

#I’m Outa Here
This was such a fun, interactive event. It was another unexpected surprise that added so much joy to our visit to The Westmoreland Museum of American Art.
