Ypsilanti Michigan

Motown Recording Studio at Hitsville, USA
In 2006 as I have mentioned before Steve and I took a six month road trip in our RV doing art shows each weekend and playing tourist the rest of the week. We covered 23 states, made very little money but had the experience of a lifetime. Our schedule took us to Michigan for a show just outside of Detroit in a small picturesque town on the Detroit River called Wyandotte. But we couldn’t find an RV park there. In fact the closest park we could find was in Ypsilanti. From what we could tell it was a very residential area but to be honest we spent very little time in Ypsilanti itself because it was Ann Arbor and Detroit that really drew us in. Ann Arbor was a typical college town. It’s the home of the University of Michigan and a really big Whole Foods that we frequented each day for provisions. But Detroit was much more alive and bustling. Unfortunately once you left downtown it became very run down and depressed. But we were on a mission. We couldn’t leave Detroit without a visit to Motown’s – Hitsville USA. All of the music that I loved growing up was recorded there. It was a real thrill to tread the very same wooden boards that the likes of Michael Jackson and the Jackson Five, Diana Ross and the Supremes and Stevie Wonder did. Hit after hit was produced by Berry Gordy and his crew. From there we went to the Henry Ford Museum which is absolutely immense covering acres and filled with a vast variety of interesting things, not just cars. And since we were so close we just had to drive across the bridge into Windsor, Ontario, Canada and pay a visit to a casino! We then returned to the comfort and coziness of our welcoming bed in our RV in Ypsilanti.
