Angie’s Great Breakfast in Garner NC! originally published on Food and Fond Memories on December 13, 2017 by sandy axelrod 0 Comments (Edit)

Angie’s Great Breakfast in Garner NC!

As has been our tradition since our son flew the coop, we celebrate Thanksgiving together. This year we went to Raleigh, North Carolina for the holiday festivities. But since it is such a long drive (about 10.5 hours) we went several days before Thanksgiving, which gave us plenty of time for visiting and exploring. Our first day on our own Steve and I went to Angie’s Restaurant because we had heard very good things about it. We certainly were not disappointed. Now I can honestly recommend Angie’s Great Breakfast in Garner NC! From the first glance at the building I felt like I was stepping back in time to an era when no one needed to lock their front doors. And the place dates back to that.

Shortly after World War II, Durwood Green, a restauranteur, converted an old barn on the corner of Garner and Yeargan Roads into Green’s Garner Grill. For over four decades Durwood Green ran the restaurant right up until he passed away in 1990. “He was known as an affable, outgoing person who loved his work. Mr. Green said many times that he kept the restaurant open not to make money, but to serve as many friends and enjoy his daily comradeship with them.” The current owner Angie Mikus shares that same passion for good food and good company. In 20 years of waiting tables at local restaurants, she developed a loyal following. Her customers would wait to sit in her section even if other tables were empty and they followed her whenever she went when she switched jobs. But Angie always had a dream of running her own place. “I had an idea of how I think people should be treated – a place where people could sit and talk, and stay all day if they want to.” Angie finally got the opportunity in September 2011 when she opened Angie’s restaurant in the same building that had been converted from an old barn so many years ago. Angie and her staff ensure Mr. Green’s desire for people to enjoy good food and good times with family and friends.”It’s literally like family here”, Angie says.

And that is exactly how the staff made us feel. Everyone, staff and customers alike, were so warm, welcoming and friendly. Even the decor makes you feel like you are sharing a meal with family. And the food is good, fresh, abundant and delicious. Steve had the decadent French Toast with a side of Grilled Bologna and I had the Western Omelet with crispy, crunchy Hash Browns and a great big fluffy biscuit. We left stuffed and ready for a brisk walk in the crisp North Carolina air.
