Great Thai Food In Northwood

Ever since Steve and I were first introduce to Thai food, about twenty five years ago, we have tried many Thai restaurants searching for the real deal. Our first taste was love at first bite. We went to a Thai restaurant with friends who guided us as to what to order. Everything was so full of flavor and spice that we agreed it was so much better than the local Chinese food the area had to offer. From that moment on when we wanted Asian food I either cooked it or we went out for Thai.

Recently I started making Pad Thai and I was afraid we would never go out for Thai food again. That was until last week. We were at an event at Rybovich Marina that was put on by Black Tie Magazine and bumped into friends of ours from our days in the catering business. Steve and I were getting hungry for real food. All of the food at the event was fried so we just drank wine instead. One friend who lives in the Northwood neighborhood where the marina is suggested a relatively new Thai restaurant nearby called Malakor Thai Cafe. And at the mere mention of the name everyone who heard said it was delicious so off we went to Malakor. Yay!
We arrived at just the right time because right after we were seated the entire restaurant filled with people. Malakor  only seats about 50 diners inside where it’s cool and beautiful. Hand painted murals cover the walls and glittering stars circle the painted night sky. There is more seating outside but it is just too hot and steamy, in August, in Florida, to enjoy a meal outdoors. The menu is quite extensive filled with interesting choices that I had never seen anywhere. We started off by sharing the Malakor Salad of shredded fresh green papaya mixed with peanuts, tomatoes and green beans dressed with chili, garlic, lime juice and palm sugar and was accompanied by two delectable tempura shrimp. The flavors all melded together to give you all sorts of tastes at once. It was sweet, spicy and citrusy. And the shrimp were coated and fried to perfection without even a hint of oil.

For our entrees Steve ordered Lobster Pad Thai and I had the Soft Shell Crab with Volcano Sauce. The portions were huge! We kept saying we would have leftovers but that was a joke because it all tasted too good to not finish every last drop. Steve’s dish had lots and lots of lobster with the rice noodles and succulent sauce. My entree exceeded all expectations. The soft shell crab was lightly coated and fried until crisp. They were sweet and crunchy, the perfect compliment to the heat of the volcano sauce. And everything was enhanced by the very fresh broccoli, cauliflower, green beans and carrots which also made for a quite colorful plate. We enjoyed our meal so much that we are going there this Saturday night with friends!
