As I sit here writing this, I realized just how appropriate it is to be sharing this book with you while we are actually in Kentucky! As I have mentioned on occasion, my posts are usually 3-4 months behind where Ladybug is currently parked. And that still holds true. But right now we are in Louisville, Kentucky and that is where you will find Ouita Michel’s restaurants. I’m not going to tell you anything else about our visit to the Bluegrass state for a couple of months. It’s just ironic that telling you about this fabulous book coincides with The Traveling Locavores being in Kentucky!

Just a Few Miles South brilliantly guides you through the food and culture of the Bluegrass state as do Ouita’s restaurants. This book will become like a treasured heirloom cookbook which is jam packed with recipes from family. The family in this case are Ouita’s restaurants Wallace Station, Holly Hill Inn, Zim’s Café, Smithtown, Windy Corner Market, The Midway Bakery and Café, and Honeywood.

Award winning Kentucky chef Edward Lee wrote about this book that “The boundless beauty of Kentucky cuisine is joyfully captured in these pages by a chef who has defined this region with her cooking. She is a custodian of tradition, a magician of flavor, and her restaurants are the narratives that tell us who we are in Kentucky. This book is a treasure for generations to come.”

Diners in the Bluegrass have been able to satisfy their cravings for Ouita Michel’s sustainable, farm to table cuisine at her restaurants for twenty years. Each of her restaurants features dishes that combine the bounty of Kentucky with Ouita’s celebrated creativity. Traditional southern staples like buttermilk biscuits, country ham and Po Boy sandwiches are all on the menu. But that’s not all the menu offers. There are unique variations on international favorites and American classics for diners to enjoy as well.

This cookbook serves up the recipes that Ouita’s restaurant patrons have come to know and love. Included are recipes for Bluegrass Benedict breakfast sandwich, Ouita’s Sardu Panini, Wallace Station’s Creamy Chicken and Mushroom Soup and Honeywood’s Hoecake Burger. Many of the dishes offer creative twists on classics like the Inside Out Hot Brown, the Wallace Cubano or the Bourbon Banh Mi.

All through the book, the chefs responsible for these delicious recipes share the rich traditions and stories behind the dishes. Just a Few Miles South will help you bring home the aroma, the flavors and the love of fresh foods made with locally sourced ingredients that you can share with your friends and family.
