Before we began our Sunday Funday in Fredericksburg, Texas we had a delicious and filling breakfast in Canyon Lake. From there, our intrepid tour guide Jacki, took us to explore more of Texas Hill Country.

The charming city of Fredericksburg is in central Texas. It has so much to offer that we were only able to scratch the surface. Known for its wineries, there were several tasting rooms along the main drag downtown.

Welcome to Our Sunday Funday in Fredericksburg Texas
Fredericksburg is mainly known for its German heritages. It was founded it 1846 by German settlers. A fact that is clearly on display at the Pioneer Museum, which features settlers’ homesteads and artifacts.

Big boots to fill!
Near the Pioneer Museum, in the town square, you can visit Marktplatz and the Vereins Kirche which is a replica of a 19th-century German church that once stood in the city.

National Museum of the Pacific War
The enormous National Museum of the Pacific War features WWII exhibits, including a recreated combat zone. But unfortunately we didn’t plan for enough time to tour the museum.

The museum traces it roots back to Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, a native of Fredericksburg born in 1885. Nimitz was a master strategist and the Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet during World War II. He led the U.S. Navy through some of its most defining moments of the war in the Pacific, from Midway to Okinawa. The is the only museum in the United States that is dedicated to the Pacific Theater of World War II,

Special note from Knotty and Nice Boutique
You may be asking “why is Fredericksburg TX so special?” The answer is clearly that its the cities German heritage. Shopping, dining and culture there is rooted in its being founded by German immigrants. But it’s also a major Texas wine destination, boasting many wineries and vineyards. Plus it’s a popular outdoor recreation location that is centered around Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. And because of the abundance of peaches grown there, it is informally referred to as the “peach capital of Texas”.

We just love our Super Bowl Champ Eagles! Certainly a surprise to see in Texas!!!
When we visited the historic Main Street was bustling with people shopping in the many boutiques and art galleries that line the street, And the restaurants serving both German-inspired and farm-to-table dishes were filled with hungry diners.

Which way should we go?
As “traveling locavores”, Steve and I loved that, due to the fertile soil in the area, there is a strong agricultural scene that resulted in an enthusiastic culinary locale using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. From Texas Hill Country cuisine at Cabernet Grill to authentic German cuisine at Der Lindenbaum there’s food for everyone’s palate. Farm-to-table dining is the norm because of Fredericksburg’s deep roots in agriculture. Some of the best farms, orchards and wineries around call Fredericksburg home.

Luckenbach Texas, a town so small, if you blink you’ll miss it!
Fredericksburg even has its own dialect which is known as Texas German. It was spoken there by the early German settlers who just refused to speak English! That’s my fun fact for the day.
