It’s Memorial Day, a day that we celebrate the lives of those brave men and women who fought to keep our country safe, and never got to return. So this got me to thinking that, while it’s important to remain healthy and to eat healthy foods, you shouldn’t need to cut out all of your favorites. If you enjoy the pastries at your local bakery, don’t sacrifice this for a diet. Or, if you love heading to your local steakhouse restaurant, there is no need to give this up as long as you’re not there all of the time. I’d like to leave you with some wisdom from the late, great Julia Child, who I had the privilege of meeting at a Catering Conference in New Orleans in 1991.

“Cooking is not a chore it is a joy. Dining is not a fuel stop, it is recreation”.

“Fresh ingredients, vibrant colors, diversifying your plate and healthy preparation,” she says, were the tenets of Julia’s cooking and eating philosophy — and the world is finally catching on today!

“Moderation. Small helpings. Sample a little bit of everything,” she once said. “These are the secrets of happiness and good health. You need to enjoy the good things in life, but you need not overindulge.”

And one more important lesson from Julia Child: “The key to healthful dieting is to eat small helpings and a great variety of everything. And above all have a good time!”
